The de facto leader of Dodge City was inarguably Marshall Matt Dillon. He was the protagonist of ‘Gunsmoke’ for all twenty years. He led the town by upholding the law and a moral standard.

Though the series often dealt with the serious side of living in the Great West, the show often had a lot of comedic moments. The witty writing and characters’ delivery added a lot of humor to the show.

In this compilation video, a fan shares their favorite scenes and lines from all twenty seasons. One particular funny bit comes when the doctor “Doc” says he won’t hang out with Marshall or his partner Chester because you can tell a man by the company he keeps. Chester replies that if Doc hangs by himself, that’s the worst company he could have.

A lot of the great clips are just one-liners. A man protests, saying, “I don’t think the marshall’s the kind of man who’d shoot a man in the back.” The reply, “Well, then he’ll turn you around and shoot you,” is excellent and reveals what kind of lawman Marshall Dillon was.

Later, another villain quips, “Ain’t you just a little bit out of your territory here, Marshall.” Marshall Dillon retorts, “I take my territory with me.” It’s lines like these that make Marshall Dillon such an iconic character.

The clips range from hilarious quips to character-driven pieces that remind viewers just how great ‘Gunsmoke’ was. Watching this video will make everyone nostalgic for Dodge City and another round at Long Branch Saloon.
