As far as Olympic sports go, ice dancing has to be up there with one of the most technically challenging disciplines. You’re using just about every part of your body to control and co-ordinate extraordinarily tricky routines, all the while skating on a sheet of frozen water. Doing the tango is hard enough – but putting it on ice is just asking for trouble.
Every four years, the Winter Olympics gives us some fascinating performances from the world’s best in this sport – and we’ve had some incredible highs and lows along the way. Who could forget UK pair, Torvill and Dean’s perfect score (and the highest of all time) for their incredible ‘Bolero’ routine at the 1984 Sarajevo games? Or the Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding controversy at the 1994 competition? Whether on or off the ice, this sport always seems to be able to deliver drama.
Thankfully, the example in the video below is for the talent of the skaters on the ice rather than the rivalry off it, as these two dancers prove to be at the peak of their game – in the run-up to the recent Winter Olympics. Skating to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic hit ‘Jesus Christ Superstar,’ Russian duo Atiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov gave a performance for the ages – and one that will live long in the memory for all those lucky enough to have seen it the first time around!
At the time, the pair were Russian National, European, World and Olympic Champions – and you can definitively see this pedigree in the way they pull off this stunning routine. Years of practice and dedication have led them to the peak of their abilities – but even in a near flawless performance – it is the final move that has everyone totally flabbergasted!
“Absolutely stunning! Now I know gravity doesn’t exist with those people,” is probably the most accurate comment that one YouTuber made on the duo’s performance – and you’re going to have to watch it to see what they mean! We wholeheartedly agree – they nail every lift and every complex technique as if they’ve been doing it for years – because they have!
Don’t miss this incredible ice dance routine by these Russian skating pros as they get some serious air with their breath-taking lifts. But don’t miss the final showpiece – it will knock your socks off for sure!
