Every year right around Christmastime, people brace themselves for the onslaught of carols. The jolly tunes come at us from every direction, in the car, at work, at the grocery store. It’s impossible to escape, and for some people, that’s just the way they like it!
For us, more carols does not always equal more fun. But there are a few Christmas classics we can listen to over and over. Ray Stevens’ “Santa Claus Is Watching you” is one of those rare, impossible to stop listening to, holiday songs.
Stevens was only 23 when he released this song, but he wasn’t a newbie in the industry. He started releasing music when he was a fresh faced 16 year old, with his single “Silver Bracelet”. It didn’t take long for him to sign his first record contract and start laying down fresh, humor-filled tracks.
Now, nearly sixty years later, Stevens has over 40 studio albums under his belt, and 93 singles. He’s won two Grammys, has been included in multiple hall-of-fames, and is well-known for his superb songwriting skills.
Still, it’s “Santa Claus Is Watching You” that remains our favorite Stevens song. With a large cast including a camel (which he later included in a re-recording of this video), and lyrics that will leave you howling, it doesn’t get any better than this.
