This brave seafarer's tale of hardship. abandonment and isolation aboard his ship for 4 years is both inspiring and tragic.
Sailors and seafarers share a bond that transcends borders and oceans. Chief Engineer Mark Laurilla expresses this kinship with an update on an abandoned sailor who was stranded for 4 years.
Adrift near the Suez Canal, Egypt, the sailor was legally obliged to stay with a large shipping vessel after the owners and crew abandoned it.

We see footage of the sailor's living conditions aboard the dilapidated ship, alone and without power. His ability to overcome loneliness and keep hopeful is quite inspiring.
We hear Chief Engineer Mark Laurilla talk of how the sailor had to brave the waters every 2 days, swimming to shore in order to get supplies and charge his phone.
It's fascinating to hear the engineer speak of his own tales of abandonment from his years at sea and how it's actually more common than you'd think.
Fortunately, thanks to efforts by a transport worker's organization, the sailor is now home safely with his family. Chief Engineer Mark shows us a photo of him with his happy family!
