Frozen face, big voice: 12 year-old singing ventriloquist wins it all

Singers, dancers, comedians, and other performers compete for fame and a million-dollar prize on the hit reality show “America’s Got Talent.” Who makes the cut is decided by a panel of celebrity judges, but members of the audience, both live and at home, get to vote on the contestants, too.

During the finale of season twelve, the audience cast an incredible 52 million votes — that gives you some idea just how popular a show this is. In the end, it came down to a contest between two amazingly talented young ladies, Angelica Hale from Atlanta and Darci Lynne Farmer from Oklahoma. Angelica, only 10 years old, has an unbelievable singing voice and her rendition of David Guetta’s “Without You” earlier in the competition was especially memorable. Meanwhile, it was 12 year-old Darci Lynne’s virtuosity as a ventriloquist that brought her all the way to the finale. In addition to some comedy, she had her puppets sing numbers by George Gershwin, the Jackson Five, Aretha Franklin, and the Beatles.

Both girls were nearly overcome with emotion as they stood on stage waiting to hear who was going to be the winner. When judge Tyra Banks announced that it was Darci Lynne, Angelica was a great sport and gave the new champion a hug.

The video of Darci Lynne’s final round performance is posted below. She started with some comic banter between herself, and her two puppets, Petunia the rabbit and Oscar the shy mouse. With that out of the way, she had the puppets sing the aptly chosen Beatles song “With a Little Help From My Friends.” As you’ll see, the contrast between Darci Lynne’s frozen lips and her powerful voice is really astonishing. She transfers all physical expressiveness to her puppets.
