Johnny Carson loved doing skits on ‘The Tonight Show,’ and in 1985, he parodied Sylvester Stallone’s hit film ‘Rambo.’ Johnny portrayed the ultimate tough guy in this hilarious skit.
Johnny is introduced as ‘Mr. Rambo’s Neighborhood,’ and he smashes through the living room door. He has a muscle suit on, a bow and arrow around his back, and a rifle around his chest.
He starts to sing, “It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood,” like ‘Mister Rogers Neighborhood,’ and then he hears a bird and shoots a whole round of his gun at it.
Then, he turns back and puts down all his weaponry as the people laugh. He stands and says in a tough Stallone voice, “Hey, how are ya, neighbor? Good to see ya. Hey, are you my friend?”
Johnny quickly reaches for his gun and jokes, acting like he will shoot if they aren’t his friend. He apologizes because Rambo doesn’t pull guns on his friends. He’s acting like Mister Rogers, but he’s tough guy, Mr. Rambo.
He says if you do something dishonorable like that, you need to do two things, first apologize, then punish yourself. Johnny slams his hand in the door and recites his military tag and number while in pain.
He booby-traps various objects around the house and sticks his hand in a toaster until it smokes. Lots of things blow up in this skit, and in the end, he blows up the mailman, and mail falls everywhere, and he says, “Until next time, boys and girls.” The crowd claps as Johnny laughs at himself.
