‘The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson’ welcomed prop comic Gallagher with his wild antics and crazy creations. Johnny isn’t sure what he’s getting into and reads the introduction card with a bit of trepidation.

A man in a red sweater and hat stands behind a sign reading "Gallaghers" on a colorful stage backdrop.

Johnny says, “This man does rather bizarre things.” He takes a long pause, thinking about what may happen next, and says, “Here is Gallagher.” Gallagher starts spinning his hat, saying, “How does he do it? Why does he do it?”

Then, Gallagher introduces the ‘handiest and the dandiest kitchen tool you’ve ever seen.’ He asks the audience, “Don’t you want to know how it works?” The audience yells, “Yeah!”

A man in a red sweater and bowler hat holds two hammers, standing in front of a colorful circus tent backdrop.

Gallagher grabs an apple and tells the audience the mystery tool is not a slicer and not a dicer. He reveals the mystery tool as a large wooden hammer saying, “The mystery is over. It is Sledge-O-Matic!” Gallagher smashes the apple, and it bursts into pieces as the audience cheers wildly.

He says, “Quick and easy! Applesauce in an instant!” Gallagher continues cracking jokes about the Sledge-O-Matic teasing that he has a watermelon to smash. Once he finally brings out the watermelon, the audience is hyped up.

A man in a red sweater and hat gestures while seated, talking to a man in a suit on a talk show set.

He moves it on the table, setting it up and aiming it at particular sections of the audience. He says, “Right now, you’re probably asking yourself, how crazy is that idiot?” The audience gets more excited in anticipation of the smash.

He smashes the watermelon by hitting it multiple times, and the audience loves it! No one knew at the time that Gallagher would become a sensation across America for smashing watermelons and performing fantastic prop comedy. His talent and routine are fully displayed, and Johnny is shocked by what he witnesses.
