Girl Becomes a Surrogate Mom of Four Orphaned Baby Red Squirrels

A woman smiles while holding a camera, surrounded by a forest, as a squirrel eats nearby.

Squirrel's kittens cannot survive on their own when orphaned. They depend on their mother to stay for about eight weeks until they can stand on their two feet. They can't pretty much do anything on their own.

Knowing this, a young Zoologist and Wildlife Photographer named Dani Connor did something unbelievable. In a video that has gone viral, Dani helped four baby squirrels beat the odds of survival in Northern Sweden.

The baby squirrels came by after Dani found their mother, Remi, lying dead on the road. While she was mourning the gorgeous mother squirrel, three baby squirrels jumped out. Alone and confident that the kittens must have been Remi's children, she took them up for nursing.

Speaking about the incident in the video, Dani said she talked to several wildlife rescues about the kittens. The outcome was that baby squirrels have meager chances of survival without their mother. There and then, she took the job up herself.

Dani would go to the forest where the kittens reside and spend hours observing and playing with them. During one of her visits, she realized the baby squirrels were not three but four. So she named them Moomin, Baby Pear, Little Flame, and Cheburashka.

As Dani spent more time with the squirrels, they got comfortable with her and came to regard her as their mom. Dani did not have to wait hours before they turned up. She would call them down with their names, and the squirrels would run to her in anticipation.

After weeks in Northern Sweden, Dani left. She came back one day to look for her babies. Unfortunately, she found only one of them. As Dani opened her curtain the following day, two young squirrels were waiting for her: Baby Pear and Cheburashka. The others, she assumed, must have been in the wild or predated on.
