The Golden Girls was an American sitcom created by Susan Harris that aired on NBC from 1985 to 1992. Starring Beatrice Arthur, Betty White, Rue McClanahan, and Estelle Getty, the show is about four elderly women who live together in Miami, Florida.

One of the show’s highlights was Dorothy’s mother, Sophia, played by Estelle Getty, reminiscing about her experiences at a retirement home called Shady Pines.

Her stories were always horrifying, portraying the retirement home as a sort of prison. While her daughter Dorothy refused to believe any of it, much of it is confirmed later in the show.

Sophia was initially checked in at Shady Pines, then in September 1985, Shady Pines burned down after a heater fire, causing Sophia to move in with Dorothy and her two roommates. Lacking a social filter, Sophia continued to annoy her daughter.

This led to the creation of Dorothy’s catchphrase, “Shady Pines, ma…,” whenever she wanted to keep her mother in check.
