Guests perform epic dance routine at school pep rally, then they take their masks off

It takes a lot of planning and hard work to put together a good high school pep rally. Teachers, coaches, and support staff are all involved, to say nothing of the event’s stars: the athletes, cheerleaders, and dance teams. What’s less obvious is that every pep rally has unsung heroes: the parents. They provide essential support, encouragement, and countless rides to and from practice. Some moms at a high school in Texas decided it would be fun to come out from behind the scenes.

The 11 moms — their sons were football players at Steele High School in Cibolo, near San Antonio — started preparing in secret for their role in the pep rally. They weren’t going to be giving speeches or anything like that. No, they were going to form their own dance squad and bust out some of the latest hot moves! This meant there was homework to do, first and foremost, carefully studying YouTube videos of “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae),” “iHeart Memphis,” and Hit the Quan.” Melissa Fields recalled her initial trepidation: “If I went to a club right now, I wouldn’t know what to do. I went on YouTube and thought ‘Oh no, there is no way we would be able to pull this off.'”

At the pep rally, held to give the football team a shot in the arm before the playoffs began, the “special guests” took to the dance floor wearing masks. According to Fields, “My legs were shaky and it felt like my knees were going to buckle. It was cool to come out of our comfort zone and show support for the boys.” The masks soon came off and the moms did a pretty good job with the new generation’s dance moves.
