Happy Feet: watch a cockatoo play peekaboo and celebrate with tap dancing

Pet owners always have a particular game they love to play with their pet. It might be as simple as fetch or a tussle like tug of war. Some pets enjoy a good game of hide and seek. In any case, games like this are an excellent way to make sure your pet gets some exercise. Games are also a great bonding experiences. But what’s a good game for a cockatoo?

Cockatoos are a type of parrot, although their plumage is much less colorful. There are 21 species of cockatoo distributed around parts of Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Like many other parrots, cockatoos have an amazing aptitude for mimicking human speech. They’ve also been seen dancing to the beat of human-made music. Scientists have determined that these highly intelligent birds can solve complex mathematical puzzles! Some species of cockatoo have very long lifespans: in captivity they can live to be 70 or even occasionally 80. While not confirmed, there have been claims of cockatoos that made it to their 100th birthday. So if you’re keeping a cockatoo as a pet, it’s definitely a long-term commitment, although one that comes with long-term rewards, too.

One fine day, Onni the cockatoo was tapping his feet on a table while interacting with his humans. In a bit of role-reversal, they decided to mimic him by drumming their fingers right back at him. Thus a game was born! As Onni honed his tap dancing skills, he was ready to really get stomping. As you’ll see in the video we’ve posted below, a successful game of peekaboo leads to an epic victory tap dance.
