Whatever our jobs are, practically all of us have gone above and beyond the call of duty at some point. Not many of us have outdone Jimmie Cox in this regard. An employee of a municipal water and sewer department near Fort Worth, Texas, he’s willing to literally dive into his work if that’s what it takes to get the job done.
When a water line in front of Andrea Adams’ house developed a huge leak, it was Jimmie who was sent to fix it. He found the pipe covered by a deep puddle of muddy water. Getting the water turned off and pumping out the puddle would have taken some time — and during that time, a small problem would have turned into a minor disaster. Jimmie knew what he’d have to do.
Andrea came out of her house and was greeted by an incredible sight: the lower half of Jimmie’s body. The rest of him was in the puddle! “When I walked back outside, the kid was in there.” When he came up for air, she asked him, “Do you mind if I take your picture? My husband is never going to believe this.” After she posted the photo on-line, it became a sensation, even getting the attention of Erin Brockovich (the real one) and Mike Rowe, the host of “Dirty Jobs.” Jimmie had a laconic take on his fame: “It feels pretty crazy that that so many people are staring at a picture of my butt. Not gonna lie.”
Jimmie seems to think his plunge was just part of the job, something anyone in his place would do. “You basically just hold your breath and if some stuff starts going up your nose, that’s too bad.” Everyone else seems to think this one-in-a-million guy is giving himself far too little credit. The company that makes Wrangler jeans was so impressed (and so happy he was wearing their product), they gave him a year’s supply!
