Jonathan, the OLDEST Living Land Animal, has His Shell Scrubbed. Beautiful!

Tortoises are known to be some of the slowest creatures in the world. They are also known for their longevity and are able to live up to more than 150 years. Having one of these animals as a pet is a true commitment.

The video below features the oldest known living land animal on the planet. Wait till you see him for yourself! This guy is called Jonathan, and he is estimated to be 184 years old.

On 19th March 2016, this Giant Tortoise was washed for the first time in recorded history by veterinarian Dr. Joe Hollins on the grounds of Plantation House, St Helena Island. Why would a tortoise need to be bathed? Dr. Hollins explained that the reason for bathing Jonathan came after he cleaned and transformed the shell of one of the female tortoises at Plantation House. He consulted a tortoise specialist to establish the method of cleaning, which includes gentle, circular scrubbing using non-abrasive materials.

Dr. Hollins is thrilled to be responsible for taking care of the oldest living land animal on earth. It is quite a unique job and a very special one. Jonathan doesn’t seem at all bothered by the bath, and the difference in his shell is visible after his bath. He must look at least 80 years younger!

He moves pretty slowly, but for an old guy, he’s getting around great. He doesn’t seem a day over 100.
