Mother Nature seems to be bipolar lately. Temperatures have already dipped to 48 degrees below zero in areas like Norris Camp, Minnesota, and it’s only February. We still have until March 20 before winter is officially over.
Besides it getting dark before you even get home from work, one of the other more annoying things about winter is having to clear snow and ice from your sidewalks and driveways.
In fact, there is a proven link between heart attacks and shoveling snow. According to studies in the U.S., around 100 men a year die of heart attacks suffered after shoveling.
Once you get your sidewalks and driveway shoveled and de-iced, next you have to worry about your car. Getting a bit of snow off of your car isn’t too bad but getting ice off of it is another thing altogether – especially when your entire car is encased in it.
Grab a spray bottle and mix 2 parts isopropyl alcohol with 1 part water. Top it off with a few drops of liquid dish soap and then shake it up to mix it all together. Spray this mixture onto your icy windshields, stand back, and watch the ice melt right in front of you.
Keep this mixture on hand for those cold, winter mornings that are still to come. You can even leave it in the car if you want, unless the forecast calls for temperatures to drop below -128.2 degrees Fahrenheit – since that’s the freezing point of isopropyl alcohol. It works to melt the layer of ice on your car glass and even keeps it from refreezing.
This is by far the easiest and fastest way to remove ice from your car windshields. All you have to do is mist this on the glass and watch it melt away. No more scraping and chipping off ice. Watch this video to see this mixture in action.
Most of the time, you just have to wait for your car to defrost after you scrape all the ice off of the windshields and windows. There is another option for you, though. This ingenious way to save yourself both time and energy.
I use this same mixture except I use a 2-gallon sprayer from any DIY store. Kt gives more even coverage. Takes a little more time because you are spraying but I am able to do most of my driveway and walkway. I use the gallon jug for heavy ice areas. Doesn’t prevent snow buildup as well as regular salt but definitely helps, plus you can de-ice car windows (front, back, all the way around) quickly.
