Let’s take a trip down memory lane together and reminisce about a good ol’ slice of Americana – the Schwan’s Home Delivery. Remember the excitement of seeing that iconic yellow truck pulling up to your house with all the tasty treats inside? Ah, those were the days!

So, it all began in 1948 when Paul and Alma Schwan bought out a partner and opened Schwan’s Dairy in Marshall, Minnesota. Their delicious ice cream recipes led to a small dairy store, a restaurant, and eventually, their son Marvin’s brilliant idea of home delivery. Marvin loaded up his 1946 Dodge panel van with dry ice and 14 gallons of ice cream and thus began a legacy.

Picture it – the yellow trucks with their distinctive cursive logo, selling 120 gallons of ice cream per day in round returnable containers. Those friendly drivers were the heart of the business, attracting a loyal customer base with their courteous assistance. By the end of the first route, Marvin had sold out of ice cream, and he knew he was onto something big.

In the 1950s, Schwan’s started expanding, adding juice concentrate and other food products to their lineup. Frozen pizza became a huge hit, eventually leading to the acquisition of Tony’s Pizza in the 1970s. With Marvin’s unwavering commitment to quality, the company continued to grow, even overcoming a devastating fire in 1974.

By the 1980s, Schwan’s had become much more than just a frozen food delivery company. They were supplying products to schools, offering Asian foods, and even introducing single-serve deep dish pizzas. Schwan’s also became pioneers in technology, with their home delivery drivers being the first to carry handheld computers for placing customer orders.

Marvin Schwan sadly passed away in 1993, but his legacy lives on. His brother Alfred took over as company president, and the family-run business continued to expand, with brands like Red Baron, Freschetta, and Pagoda gracing grocery store shelves. In 2019, the home delivery division was spun off as an independent company, still owned by the Schwan family.
