Morquio Syndrome is a rare congenital disorder that can cause a whole host of medical problems: skeletal abnormalities, heart issues, joint disease, and much more. For an 11 year-old girl named Bella, this meant a life increasingly constrained by mobility problems.
But then a gigantic black-and-white Great Dane named George came into Bella’s life, changing it forever. When they met, they bonded almost instantaneously. As one of the Service Dog Project’s trainers recalled, “One day, Bella climbed up with George and she just started talking to George and next thing you know, his head is in her lap and he’s just looking up at her like she’s the best thing in the whole world.” Bella herself summarized it beautifully: “I could tell he needed me and I needed him.”
The truly incredible thing is just how much George has been able to help Bella. Before she had the giant dog at her side, she mainly had to get around using a wheelchair, only occasionally being up to using crutches. George, who’s an expert mobility service dog, managed to get her to a point where she could walk without the crutches! “The first time I walked with George, it was amazing. It was like, I haven’t walked in so long and now I get to do it again.”
Needless to say, George is a very good dog, quite possibly the best dog ever. Thanks to all his hard work, Bella has become more independent than would ever have been possible otherwise. The folks at BarkPost thought the Great Dane deserved a reward, so they treated him to a “dog’s best day.” George was taken to a bunch of fun places and enjoyed an entire day of over-the-top canine indulgence. It was the stuff of any dog’s wildest dreams!
