It was 1993, a Thursday night in May. Murder, She Wrote was on CBS at 8 PM, right after dinner time. Gas was about $1.10 a gallon, and Bill Clinton had just become president a few months earlier.
The episode started with Jessica Fletcher visiting her friend Francis in Beverly Hills. Francis worked for a tabloid magazine called A-List. There was drama at her workplace about leaks and competing magazines getting scoops before them. Jessica got invited to a fancy dinner party at Francis’s house that night.
The party was full of gossipy tabloid types sipping rosé and spilling tea.
At the party, Jessica met a bunch of characters – a plastic surgeon, a baseball player, and even a celebrity florist named Billy Kyle. But as the night went on, Jessica started feeling sleepy. She dozed off during the boring dinner conversation.
Suddenly, Jessica “woke up” to find out Billy Kyle had been murdered! Lieutenant Caceras was investigating, and of course, Jessica’s friend Francis became a suspect. Jessica had to defend her friend and solve the case. She questioned a baseball player in the hospital, uncovered affairs and bribery, and eventually figured out the killer was June Cobb, another party guest.
Just as June pulled a gun on Jessica, there was a loud noise. Jessica woke up for real this time – back at the dinner party. The whole murder mystery had been a dream!
This kooky episode gave us a peek into how Jessica comes up with her stories.
If you’re looking for a wild ride through Jessica Fletcher’s imagination, this bonkers episode delivers. It’s got all the Murder, She Wrote staples – nosy Jessica, a whodunit mystery, and a cast of suspicious characters – but with a trippy dream twist that’ll keep you guessing.
