‘The Carol Burnett Show‘ was one of the most popular tv shows of all time. It ran for 11 seasons, and the last episode aired on March 29th, 1978. The final show was a two-hour, star-studded farewell to Carol and her co-stars.
As the finale begins, Tim Conway appears beside Carol and interrupts her. Conway says, “I hate to kind of interrupt here, but you have a favorite performer, and the guy’s been here every week with his piano, and you’ve never let him on the show. I think at this time since it’s the last show and everything, I’d like to take the opportunity to give the guy a break.”
Carol has no idea what is happening, and the stage opens to reveal her favorite actor, Jimmy Stewart. Carol lets out a loud shriek and clutches her face. She is visibly shaken and crying.
Jimmy Stewart sits at a grand piano and begins playing and singing the tune, ‘Ragtime Cowboy Joe.’ After the song, the two icons hug, and the audience applauds wildly.
Carol is very emotional and says to the audience, ‘You don’t know what this means to me tonight. This man has been my favorite actor for so many years. I have talked about him. I have worshipped him. I can’t believe that you came!”
Stewart replies, ‘Now, now Carol. I just feel so wonderful to be here and to be a part of all these millions of people to thank you for all the wonderful, beautiful times you’ve given us for eleven years!’
Jimmy adds, ‘We can’t wait to find out what you’re going to do next! Thank you for having me on your show. I love you, Carol.’ Carol replies, ‘I love you so much!’ It is a fantastic tv moment that truly caught Carol by surprise!
