Remember the good old days of shopping at the local grocery store with the family? Let's take a stroll down memory lane and revisit one of those memorable stores from the past - Jitney Jungle. Oh yes, that quirky name surely brings back a flood of nostalgia!

You're walking into the very first self-service Jitney Jungle store, which opened on East Capitol Street in downtown Jackson, Mississippi, back in 1919. The store was buzzing with excitement, and its unique name was inspired by the slang term "jitney" meaning a nickel, echoing the company's slogan "Save a Nickel on a Quarter." Ingenious, right?
What's more, Jitney Jungle fought a lawsuit against Piggly Wiggly, claiming they had exclusive rights to the cash and carry system. Thankfully, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of our beloved Jitney Jungle, and their expansion was off to the races! They even opened their first true supermarket with air conditioning and a women's restroom in 1934 - talk about cutting edge!

Did you know that Jitney Jungle bought its own bakery in 1954? That's right! They wanted to provide their customers with the freshest baked goods. However, they were not so keen on the trading stamp craze of the 1950s and only gave in after customers demanded them in 1958.
Sadly, after 80 years of being a family-run business, the Holman and McCarty families sold their chain of grocery stores to an investment firm in New York in 1996. The rapid expansion that followed led to financial trouble, and by 1999, Jitney Jungle filed for bankruptcy protection. In 2001, they sold 125 stores to Winn-Dixie, marking the end of an era for those loyal Jitney Jungle shoppers.
