The world lost a great performer and beautiful person this year when country music singer Joey Feek passed away from ovarian cancer. She was laid to rest at her family farm in Pottsville, Tennessee in March of this year, leaving behind loving husband Rory and adorable 2-year-old daughter Indiana.
Joey’s family, closest friends and neighbors attended the private ceremony, paying their respects to Joey and her husband and daughter. In attendance was close family friend and gospel music legend Bill Gaither.
Gaither took a moment to speak to PEOPLE Magazine following the funeral, where he shared details about the heartbreakingly beautiful day. “It was tearful, but it was optimistic, especially being on the dirt,” Gaither said. “She was part of the earth. We all felt as though we were close to her.”
Joey was born to her final resting place in the Feek family cemetery via a horse drawn carriage. She was in love with the farm, and chose the location so she would always be close to her family.
Laid to rest in a hand-built casket fashioned out of trees from the farm, Joey can rest in peace.
