Johnny Carson and David Letterman discover they are neighbors in surprise twist

In 1985, Johnny Carson welcomed David Letterman to his show, and the two late-night rivals had a blast together. Johnny starts by telling Dave that one question from the audience was asking, “If you were my son, which I thought was flattering in a way.” David says, “To whom?!”

Letterman starts talking to Johnny with an anecdote. David gets behind the trash truck in his neighborhood and notes that the sign on the truck says, “Vehicle makes frequent stops. Do not follow.” Letterman sarcastically jokes that bureaucracy has ruined another fun thing.

Then, David says, “So, is this the deal? You and I are in the same neighborhood?” Johnny said that he didn’t realize they lived in Malibu. David tells him, “We don’t take a liking to show people.” Everyone laughs at David’s joke.

Letterman says, “When you buy a house, after the deal is closed, you start hearing things about the house after you bought it.” He runs into a guy at the store who asks if David bought that house on the corner. David says yes, and the guy says, “Let me ask you a question. How many of them gay wrestlers did they find buried in the yard?” Everyone is cracking up at David’s strange humor.

Johnny says, “Is there anything I should know about this area?” Letterman says that if an event wipes both him and Johnny out, Merv will be king, referring to the great TV host Merv Griffin.

Johnny asks David if he’d like to come visit someday. Letterman says, “I’d love to come by. I’d be scared silly. Get the tires out of the yard, and I’ll come in.” The audience loves the back-and-forth between the two great hosts.

The two men go on to roast their own bosses at NBC for their poor Christmas gift to them, which was an embroidered pillow that reads, “NBC loves chocolate…and YOU!” David shows his pillow, and Johnny cracks up. Johnny sarcastically says, “It’s a keepsake!” The entire interview is filled with laughs from these TV legends.
