One of Johnny Cash’s famous songs, “She Used to Love Me A Lot,” recently came into the limelight because of the singer’s massive fan following. The iconic vocalist enjoyed an unprecedented run of hits since the late 50s & is one of the most celebrated artists ever.
Cash’s version has been doing rounds amongst music lovers because of the song’s deep emotions & meaningful lyrics. The talented vocalist has music for every moment. But unfortunately, this song was shelved in the 1980s and only released recently.
The lyrics portray the narrator’s emotion when he sees his lost love through the window of a café while driving by. He stops after seeing the lost and lonely look of the girl. He immediately decides to meet her because he wants to cherish the memories they have spent together.
John Hillcoat, the music video director, has been a lifelong fan of Cash and was inspired by his voice. This inspiration made him team up with Cash and create this lovely song.
The lyrics speak about not taking your loved ones for granted because no matter how much anyone loves you, they have a breaking point. However, Hillcoat wanted to widen the song’s interpretation as a love song. He wanted to include a different perspective about the country in the music video.
The imagery portrayed in the song is quite powerful. It has clips from around the country, such as the Wall Street, financial buildings, homeless people, and ex-cons creating a nostalgic & meaningful tone to this melodious track.
In one of his interviews, Hillcoat mentions, “We went to Los Angeles, Santa Fe, New York, and also prisons in Albuquerque and Tennessee. These tent villages just went on, block after block.” Hillcoat touches on several aspects that Cash fans will appreciate with this music video, such as the singer’s Nashville Lake House.
