Josh Turner’s Hit ‘Long Black Train’ Delivers An Inspirational Ride To Redemption

Award winning, Country music artist Josh Turner sures know how to turn heads. When he debuted “Long Black Train” at the Grand Ole Opry back in December of 2001, people started to sit up and pay attention to his work.

It was another two years before Turner officially released the single, in July of 2003, but it was worth the wait. “Long Black Train” immediately went to number one on the charts and spent over thirty weeks on the Billboard Country charts. In June of 2006 it was officially certified gold.

This spiritual tune is full of beautiful imagery and a good message, as well. The symbolism in the song represents the temptations we all face in our daily lives. He sings about the importance of overcoming those temptations and triumphing in the face of adversity.

Turner wrote the song after having a vivid visual experience. A message from God, perhaps? He told Boot.com of his experience: “Long Black Train’ was inspired by a vision that I had of a long, black train running down this track way out in the middle of nowhere. I could see people standing out to the sides of this track watching this train go by. As I was walking, experiencing this vision, I kept asking myself, ‘What does this vision mean and what is this train?’ It dawned on me that this train was a physical metaphor for temptation. These people are caught up in the decision of whether or not to go on this train.”
