Christmas is almost here, and with it comes the big question everyone has always asked — “What is the best Christmas song ever?” The answer to this question has proved elusive over the years.
For decades, many songs have been written and performed for Christmas. From Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” to Justin Bieber’s “Mistletoe,” musicians have done their best to outdo each other. Kelly Clarkson’s “Underneath the Tree” from her 2013 album, “Wrapped in Red,” is one of those songs.
Underneath the Tree is written by Clarkson and Greg Kurstin, who also produced the song. The Christmas-themed song spoke of appreciation for companionship during the holiday and that a companion is the only present needed underneath the tree.
Clarkson posted the official video of the Christmas-themed song on her youtube page on Dec. 3, 2013. Despite having only 3.4 million subscribers, the video has garnered over 30 million views on Clarkson’s official youtube page — a figure almost eight times the number of subscribers.
The video also had 114,000 likes, and viewers commented on it 6,176 times. One viewer commented, “Underrated. Don’t understand why this song isn’t played on repeat like ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ does every year.”
A second viewer also made their opinion of the song known by commenting, “Honestly, this is so underrated! This song is probably the most decent Christmas song… Come on! This needs more success!” “Maybe I might be in the minority here, but I prefer this song over ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’. Her voice is beautiful,” another said.
While there might be no generally-accepted best Christmas-themed song, Clarkson’s “Underneath the Tree” is undoubtedly a serious contender for that position. What better way to appreciate those who stood by us all through the year than letting them know that no Christmas present matters as much as having them “Underneath the tree!”
