‘America’s Got Talent’ welcomed a 20-year-old singer from Burnt Hills, New York, named Kieran Rhodes. His talent is impressive, along with his backstory. Kieran just recently discovered his musical ability.
Simon asks him about himself and finds out that Kieran was a baseball player his whole life. He was planning for college baseball, but when he was a freshman in high school, he wanted to learn music.
He looked up piano to teach himself and discovered Billy Joel. Kieran became invested and began teaching himself piano as well as how to sing and write music. He became so good at music that he was accepted into Berklee College of Music.
Simon asks how many people at that college are self-taught, and Kieran responds, ‘Not a lot!’ Kieran tells Simon it’s intimidating because many of the kids have been training their whole life to get to that school.
Simon asks why he came to ‘AGT,’ and Kieran tells him it is the best way to introduce himself to the world. They wish him luck, and Simon asks if he is going to sing a Billy Joel song which Kieran confirms.
Simon stops him in the middle of the song and asks Kieran if he has his own songs ready. He says yes, and it is titled, ‘Disengage.’ The song is about depression, and he wrote it when he was having a difficult time.
Kieran starts to tear up at the song’s end, and host Terry Crews says, ‘I think we just witnessed something very special right now.’ The judges call him a star, and they think he is spectacular. Simon tells Kieran that he hopes the audition can change his life. All the judges give him a ‘Yes,’ and Kieran gives Simon a thumbs up as he walks off.
