The song was written by 'The Boss' Bruce Springsteen, who could not record his own songs at the time due to litigation with his former manager. The tune rose to number 2 on the charts, and Springsteen recorded his own version in the 80s.

Bruce Springsteen didn't initially write the song for the Pointer Sisters. Instead, he was writing it for Elvis Presley, his idol growing up. Presley passed away soon after receiving Springsteen's demo in 1977.

The song charted in 1978 and helped the sisters rise to fame. They are also known for their other hits, including, 'I'm So Excited,' 'Jump (For My Love),' and 'Slow Hand.'

They had 13 Top 20 hits between 1973 through 1985. After starting with sisters June and Bonnie under the name 'Pointers, a Pair,' the group added sisters Ruth and Anita to the mix. The Pointer Sisters received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1994.
