What’s your take on jazz music? Jazz music is embedded in America’s roots. Jazz music is like remembering all those days when you were at home as a kid. Great green fields, the sun shining brightly, and you didn’t have a care in the world. That’s the main reason that people like it, it helps them remember, reflect and dream. Jazz gave me a way to dream about what I could do.
It became a therapy for me. Even more than that, it gave me company when I was feeling lonely. I started to learn how to play the trumpet because of it. I would dream to play like the great musicians of the time. I would practice for hours playing on top of their recordings. At first, I didn’t sound very good, but with time I started to get better. This gave me the chance to meet new people.
I was very shy as a kid, so knowing how to play the trumpet gave me a lot of chances to socialize, especially when I started playing for a few local bands. My father used to tell me to focus on my studies. I was relentless at practicing. I would practice for about 6-7 hours a day. I basically did it when I had time to. If I wasn’t going to school, eating, taking a shower or doing homework, I would be playing.
Jazz instilled in me the love for another wonderful musical instrument that I knew I needed to learn how to play, the piano. The way the keys sounded in each one of my favorite songs would help in telling the story of each song. Those who have played a musical instrument will know what I’m talking about. For those who don’t, let me put it this way. Each song has a beginning and an end, just like any story does.
The feelings you experience throughout the song are the story itself. So, the story a song tells you, will be different from the story it tells me. The song’s beat will give you a hint of the type of story it will be. And while there are several types of music, jazz is the one genre that tells the most beautiful stories. Jazz music speaks to you of your dreams, of the things you left behind and that are now part of you.
