Looking Back at Shopping at Bradlees

It’s always a pleasure to take a trip down memory lane together. Today, I’ve got a real gem for you: remember the good old days of Bradlees department stores? Those bustling shopping havens with incredible bargains and a little bit of everything? Oh, the nostalgia is strong with this one!

Picture it: the late 1950s, when three forward-thinking businessmen met at the Bradley International Airport in Connecticut and envisioned a store that offered a wide variety of goods at discount prices. That’s how Bradlees was born, with the first store opening its doors in New London, Connecticut, in 1958.

The original concept was unique, with different departments run by different licensees, but as we know, that model lasted only a short time. By 1961, the New England-based grocery chain Stop & Shop bought the struggling company, infusing much-needed cash and transitioning to direct ownership of all departments. That’s when Bradlees really began to thrive.

By the end of the ’60s, Bradlees was rapidly expanding, becoming a mainstay in shopping plazas across the Northeast. Oh, and remember those food counters where we could grab a quick bite while shopping? Good times, indeed!

As Bradlees continued to grow in the ’70s and ’80s, it had to stay competitive with the likes of Walmart and Kmart. Remember those catchy commercials with Cynthia Harris as Mrs. B? “At Bradlees, you buy what Mrs. B buys, and nobody can buy like Mrs. B!” That jingle still gets stuck in my head!

Sadly, as we all know, Bradlees couldn’t keep up with the competition and the financial turmoil that came with its parent company’s hostile takeover. The last Bradlees department store closed its doors in March of 2001, leaving us with nothing but memories of a simpler time.

But hey, let’s not dwell on the end of an era. Instead, let’s celebrate the fantastic memories we shared, roaming the aisles of Bradlees in search of great deals and enjoying the one-stop shopping experience that made it so beloved.
