There’s no greater feeling in life than being a father, the special day when part of you and your loved one is brought into this world. Mark Augler was like every other guy, he was genuinely excited about the news his wife gave to him. He was going to be a father again and in this opportunity for the fifth time. Unfortunately, nobody knows how faith is going to treat us, there is a popular saying that goes like this: “Life is like a box of chocolate, we never know what we are going to get”, a lot of meaning is contained in these words and we can apply it on many different levels of our lives.
A couple of months later Mark was rushed to the hospital due to a severe respiratory trouble. He was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, a rare respiratory disease in which scars are formed in the lung tissues, leading to serious breathing problems. It appears that the same chemotherapy that helped him to win the battle against cancer caused him the illness. Sadly the doctors told him that odds were not in his favor and his chances of survive were minimum. The happiness about his new daughter had suddenly faded away from his life.
Watching someone you have known for many years in such a delicate state laying on the bed can be a very painful experience, especially if your whole family is depending on you. As the time passed the situation was turning more and more critical so Mark’s wife decided to make the most selfless action that you could ever possibly imagine. She induced labor on purpose to give birth to her daughter early. The idea was to make sure that his dying father could get the chance to see her before he passed away.
You need to have a lot of courage to make that decision in such a critical situation; doctors gave Mark only two days to live after the diagnosis was done, so her wife had to act quickly in order to save time and show him his baby girl. Moments later doctor performed successfully the surgery and brought their new little bundle of joy into this world, they chose the name Savanah for the baby.
After all the ups and down they went through, the main objective was finally completed. Mark and his wife wrapped their baby girl into their arms, giving together a warm hug to her daughter for the first and final time. It was a rare combination of joy and sadness, but surrounded by his family we can say for sure that it was a peaceful way to say goodbye.
