Nat King Cole recorded over 100 songs that became hits on the Billboard charts during his career. Cole is known for his silky smooth voice and classy style.
In this clip, Cole sings one of his most famous songs, “Too Young,” which is about a girl who thinks she and her partner are not grown enough to have a serious relationship.
Cole is dressed in a beautiful suit and sings without a microphone for Ed Sullivan’s audience. Broadcasted all over the nation, Sullivan brought music artists into everyone’s living room.
Cole had a very successful career; however, as a Black singer in the 1950s, he had to suffer the effects of racism, even getting attacked on stage in Birmingham, Alabama, during a concert.
Through all of his challenges, Cole did not give up. He continued to perform all over the country for massive audiences. His eldest daughter, Natalie, would make a successful music career as well.
In addition to singing, Nat King Cole was also an accomplished piano player. He learned to sing and play from his mother, a church organist.
Cole grew up in the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. This neighborhood was known for its Black artists. It was the central area for Black art after the Harlem Renaissance period. Sneaking out at night to visit clubs and listen to Louis Armstrong and Jimmie Noone really influenced Cole. He eventually made his own mark on the jazz world.
