Nation Continues To Hunt Protected Whales, So These Hackers Shut Down Its Websites

Hackers can get a pretty bad rap sometimes. But when it comes to protecting the lives of marine animals, one hacker group is stepping up. Their actions spoke louder than words when they shut down an entire government’s website due to their poor treatment of these protected marine mammals.

Activists from the group Anonymous claimed responsibility for an attack that shut down five Icelandic government sites late last year. Their reason? Iceland has continued to perpetuate the slaughter of whales, despite them being on the endangered watch list.

“Whales do not have a voice,” the group said in a video posted online. “We will be a voice for them. It’s time to speak out about this impending extinction of a species. It’s time to let Iceland know we will not stand by and watch as they drive this animal to extinction.”

They are calling for a boycott against goods produced in Iceland. The cruel practices of the country’s whaling industry are a focal point of the activist’s video. Iceland is one of three countries that continue to hunt whales, despite an international moratorium on the practic. The others include Japan, and Norway.
