Choirs have a good track record on America’s Got Talent. The NFL Players Choir is no exception. The group has a unique team dynamic that blends a love of gospel music with pro football.
The group, composed of current and former football players, has been performing for over a decade, inspiring millions. The singing team made their debut appearance in 2008 at Super Bowl XLII in Phoenix, Arizona, and since then, they have performed in a variety of venues, often simply for charity.
Now, the choir tackles their dream of singing on stage with the inspirational hit “Lean on Me” by Bill Withers.
Written in 1972 by Bill Withers, the song has a wide appeal. People from any background can relate to the lyrics. Withers was quoted saying, “It’s a rural song that translates across demographic lines. Who could argue with the fact that it would be nice to have somebody who really was that way? Who couldn’t love this song? Not only is it uplifting and heartfelt, but it also embodies what America is all about. It was an exceptional choice, the perfect song for the team’s debut appearance on America’s Got Talent.
The choir sang two versions of ‘Lean On Me’ — the first one was accompanied with a musical soundtrack. Then, Simon Cowell asked for an encore, acapella style, and that’s when the group’s beautiful voices could really be heard and appreciated. The harmonies were beautiful, and they sang with one heart.
With or without the background music, the guys gave me goosebumps, but let’s take a moment to give Simon some respect. The dude is a genius for suggesting an acapella version. He was right on the money.
The judges concurred. Heidi Klum, Sofia Vergara, and Simon Cowell gave the singers their “Yes” votes. Howie Mandell didn’t appear on the show because he wasn’t feeling well, but there’s no doubt it would have been four yeses had he been there. (Get well soon, Howie!)
I love the choir and its positive, beautiful energy. They have the harmonies and the vibes. I feel like they are the literal embodiment of the phrase “America’s Got Talent”.
