Peggy Lee outdoes herself on The Ed Sullivan show with her live version of "New York City Blues." It was a fitting choice for her appearance because, as you may know, the show was taped and produced in New York. The song starts slow and simple, making you think that she is stuck in a city she hates. As the beat picks up and the story told within the song is continued, you soon see that she actually loves the town.

Many of you should be able to relate to this concept, no matter where you live. When you grow up in an area, more times than not, you fall in love with it, even though you continually say that you want to get out of the location as soon as you can. Some of us indeed end up moving are roots to a new location or a completely different country. Still, overall, we stay where we grow up or end up back there after reaching senior citizen status.

The main reason for this is because it is familiar to us. As we age, we realize many of the memories we have formed throughout our time is with our parents as they guide us through our young decisions. We all remember the areas where we had our first kiss, our first drink, our first real friend, and the first time that we had our hearts broken.

As we age, things change within us, and we are not just talking about our bodies. Our minds start to wander back to when life was simple for us. When we were able to go to school, hang out with our friends, and go on adventures that would create fun and learning, all wrapped into one big ball.

The city that we grow up in is where we end up living by, depending on the town's size and the location of our childhood home. Sometimes, though, we do end up hating where we grew up. Regardless of the reason, when this happens, we move to a big city where we can become lost in the multitude of people scurrying throughout the city day and night.

No matter where we grew up or where we ended up, "New York City Blues" by Peggy Lee strikes us in a way that cannot be explained. We all end up finding something to love in the city we live in, and even though we may have thoughts of leaving, we end up staying. Not because we have to, but because we cannot picture ourselves living anywhere else.
