When Emma the pig was brought to Apricot Lane Farms in California, she was in very poor health.
Not only was she underweight and very sick, she was also pregnant.
The proprietors of the farm only thought she would give birth to six piglets, but she ended up with an amazing 17 piglets, and that wasn’t even the greatest surprise for the mama pig.
John Chester and his wife Molly were elated, but Emma wasn’t out of the rough yet – she was suffering from exhaustion, a fever and hardened udders. Chester took her babies away from her to let her get some rest, so she could hopefully recover.
The team decreased Emma’s fever, but she wouldn’t eat and was on the brink of death.
So the Chester’s decided to give Emma a reason to live, and the decision saved the pig’s life.
“What Emma might need was a reason to live,” Chester thought, according to the Huffington Post. “Even if it might kill her.”
The piglets were put back in the pen with Emma, and to the delight of John and Molly, Emma’s health started improving right away.
“If I hadn’t seen this with my own eyes, I would never have believed it,” Chester said. Emma was able to nourish the piglets until they were ready to set out on their own. She is now a healthy pig, and even has a new friend.
Describing the happy ending to the saga of Emma the pig, Chester said, “It’s so obvious that she was saved by her calling. In her case, it was to be a mom… Some might say that the very thing that could threaten to take us down in life can, at times, be the one thing that keeps us alive.”
