When Emma arrived at the Apricot Lane Farms, she was a very skinny and sickly pig. And to top it off, she was also pregnant. She was in a miserable condition and it was stated that she should be considered lucky if she had just six piglets. But Emma defied the odds and gave birth to 17 piglets, 13 of which were alive. Her rescuers couldn’t believe it and were in a bit of shock.
However, the price she paid for the labor was high and she found herself on the edge of life and death. Emma developed a fever of 108 after giving birth and stopped producing milk. They removed the piglets and gave her a much needed break, but if she died, they would have to bottle feed 13 piglets 3 to 4 times a day. A 24/7 task that they didn’t relish.
They pulled out every trick in the book and Emma survived. Once she was feeling better, she immediately started teaching her piglets the basics of how to dig in the mud and how to be a pig. These 13 piglets and their mom were soon thriving. What an incredible story and an amazing pig.
