Pink’s emotional VMA speech: “You are beautiful and I love you!”

Singer, songwriter, dancer, and actress Alecia Beth Moore is better known as Pink. She’s an outspoken rebel with a cause, always ready to stand up for equality and freedom of self-expression. At the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards, she conveyed her personality and beliefs with a wonderful story about her daughter Willow.

Pink told the story while accepting the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. “Recently I was driving my daughter to school, and she said to me out of the blue, ‘Mama, I’m the ugliest girl I know.’ And I said, ‘Huh?'” Willow explained that she looked like “a boy with long hair.” Pink was baffled. Her daughter was only six. Where was this coming from?

When they got home, Pink came up with a great idea: a Power Point presentation! It listed androgynous rock stars, “artists that live their truth, are probably made fun of every day of their life, and carry on, and wave their flag, and inspire the rest of us. These are artists like Michael Jackson, and David Bowie, and Freddy Mercury, and Annie Lennox, and Prince, and Janice Joplin, George Michael, Elton John. So many artists… Her eyes glazed over.”

Pink explained to her daughter that her own tomboy aesthetic is what made her the woman she is today, selling out entire arenas! “So, baby girl, we don’t change. We take the gravel and the shell and we make a pearl. And we help other people to change, so that they can see more kinds of beauty.” As you’ll see in the video posted below, at the end of her acceptance speech, Pink had a special message for Willow: “And you, my darling girl. You are beautiful and I love you.”
