Even though she got to live her adulthood in the wild, Emily the elephant was once an orphan baby at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya. They raised her from a baby and were able to release her back out into the wild into her natural habitat. And on December 23 of 2014, she returned to her foster home without any incitement, to give birth to her calf in the company of the people who played an important part in bringing her up. They weren’t expecting her, but they sure were happy to see her again.
Though Emily was deprived of her family at a young age, she now has two daughters of her own, Eve and the newborn Emma. The rest of the herd was overjoyed when they saw the little baby being born. They quickly gathered around Emily to help her with Emma. In the elephant world, they believe it takes a village to raise their young and are always there to help the new mom. The keepers of the trust were amazed and excited by Emily’s choice to deliver at the Trust. They say an elephant never forgets, and it seems Emily didn’t forget what the Trust did for her.
