Can you imagine getting a diagnosis from your doctor that is ultimately a death sentence. All of a sudden, your plans for the rest of your life… gone. Instead, you have to make sure that you have your life in order before you pass. But what if you weren’t the only one you had to worry about? What if you had another life growing inside you, one that could be snuffed out like yours? But what if you had a chance to save that life? One Polish mother had that decision.
The baby’s mother got a terrible diagnosis – brain tumor. She could have had surgery, but she was worried about the baby that she had just discovered she was pregnant with. So, in one of the most noble sacrifices I’ve ever seen, she turned down the treatment. Eventually, she collapsed and was brought into the hospital, brain-dead. The staff, knowing her situation, kept her clinically alive while staving off any infections and other things before delivering her baby at 25 weeks .
The baby was born very underweight, weighing only one kilogram – or basically 2.2 pounds. He was brought into the world at only the most viable threshold for pregnancy. I’m sure, somewhere, his mother smiled inside as she finally slipped away. She must have known that he had been removed from her body. The baby spent 145 days in intensive care before he went home.
This is, of course, a bittersweet story. The baby will never know his biological mother. Who knows if his father will ever remarry, but there will have to be a day when he’s told what actually happened with his mother. I hope his father tells him what a sacrifice she did, refusing surgery that could have saved her life so that he might have a chance to enter the world . I hope he goes far in life to honor his mother.
What a sobering though. This baby is so lucky that he had such a selfless mother. What do you think about all this? Tell us in the comments section. Also, please “Like” us on Facebook.
