Happy, a rescued house sparrow, lived with his mom, Maria, and followed her around like a small puppy. The sparrow wanted to do everything that his owner did. Everything Maria would eat or drink, he would want to try it. Happy recognized his name and would come to Maria whenever she called for him.
If he was mad at her, he would make her understand that he did not like something and continuously chirped. Then, Happy would vent out his anger at her. The little bird had even mastered the skill of understanding his mom’s command. When Maria would ask him to wait, he would patiently wait, and as soon as she called for him, he would fly and sit on her fingers.
Maria had found Happy when he was just a day old and pecked something on the street. He was just the size of Maria’s little finger. The poor bird had his head bleeding and had a big scab on his nose.
Maria brought Happy home and then took him to rehab. Two days later, the person she had requested to help with the bird called up and told her that the bird was not releasable. The rehabber even told her that the vet had looked at him and informed her that they had to euthanize him unless someone wanted to adopt Happy. Maria quickly went and picked the innocent bird and brought him home.
Two weeks after Maria brought Happy home, her dog died. So, the little bird gave the grieving dog mama a purpose in life. Maria fed him and kept him alive. Happy has grown up and has been with Maria for almost a year.
Happy loved to snuggle and wanted his mama to pet him just like any dog would do. Unfortunately, Happy was not releasable because his beak was covered in a big scab when he was a baby. That had eaten away his top beak and his sinuses. Maria actually went ahead and even checked if she could legally keep him and found that she could because he was a non-native species of California.
The bird had learned a technique to feed himself now. He goes to the side instead of going straight down. So, he had found a way to overcome his weakness. The bird loved to show the nest to his mama that he had built for himself in the house. He would always tell her to follow him. Happy loved to welcome anyone who came to the house and is a friendly bird. Maria believed sparrows are very smart. The sparrow used to react to people’s emotions and feelings intelligently. The proud mama loved the bird and couldn’t imagine her life without him.
