It’s only been a few months since Joey Feek, one half of the popular country music duo Joey+Rory, passed away from ovarian cancer, but it feels like a lot longer. The world lost an amazing artist, and her family lost a devoted wife and mother.
One of Joey’s goals near the end of her life was to live long enough to see her daughter’s second birthday. Joey was diagnosed with cancer just week after her daughter, Indiana, was born, and the years following were full of pain and heartache. But with Indiana, they were full of joy, as well.
Joey fought hard to get to see her little girl’s birthday. Her husband, Rory, shared some of Joey’s excitement over seeing the milestone in a blog he posted shortly after the occasion.
“Joey barely slept the night before Indiana’s birthday. She was too excited. Jody said she didn’t fall asleep until about 5 am, around the time that Indy and I woke up. When Joey woke up, a little before noon, I came in to see her…and tears were flowing down her face. Again, I put my arms around her and asked, ‘why are you crying honey?’…’We made it…’, she softly answered. ‘We made it’.”
It wasn’t long after Indiana’s birthday that Joey chose to stop fighting the cancer. According to Rory, she was ready to stop the battle and go home. This gave her a chance to say goodbyes to her parents and sisters.
For Rory, she had this last message to share: “I have no regrets… I can honestly say, that I have done everything I wanted to do and lived the life I always wanted to live”.
