Roy Clark is known as one of the most talented and respected banjo players in the world, and for good reason. As the host of the hit television show Hee Haw from 1969-1992, millions of people the world over have seen Clark play, and his talent in unquestionable.
Clark, who has been playing for over 60 years, also plays the classical guitar and many other instruments. Still, the banjo is the one he is known for. Due to his incredible skills as a musician, Clark has been credited with influencing multiple generations of bluegrass and country music artists.
During one especially memorable episode of Hee Haw, Clark faced off against his friend and fellow banjo player, Buck Trent, for an epic battle. The two played the classic, “Dueling Banjos,” made famous by the movie Deliverance.
When they start their performance, Clark and Trent take turns playing the same short pieces. As the song progresses, the music grows more intricate, the patterns lengthen, and soon Clark and Trent ended are playing their own, distinct solos.
Toward the end, the two strains of music begin to meld back into one, until Clark and Trent are once again playing together. The result is an energetic, get up and dance kind of tune!
