Rusty the Cat Saves His Human's Life by Sensing Her Heart Attack!

A woman in a red jacket sits on a bench at a bus stop, with a poster and a chain-link fence in the background.

Claire Nelson adopted Rusty from the Humane Society of Berks County. No one expected much from Rusty as he was an elderly cat when Claire got him, but she quickly fell in love.

One day Claire believed she was sick with indigestion. She didn’t think much of it — but Rusty became very anxious.

“Every time I tried to sit down or go back to bed and lay down, the cat would jump up on me; put his paws on my leg – pawing at my chest, letting out these horrible meows. It was totally out of character for him,” she said.

Motivated by Rusty, Claire called the doctor and scheduled a visit. While she was waiting at the bus station, something went terribly wrong. She called 911.

It turned out that Claire was suffering a heart attack and Rusty had sensed it all along. If he hadn’t been anxious, she never would have gotten help.

“The best thing I ever did was go to Humane Society and adopt this cat. Because at the time I thought maybe I was saving his life, it turned out he saved mine,” Claire said.

Rusty’s sense could be connected to old predatory behavior that allows cats to sense when other animals are weak or it could be that his connection with Claire is so deep he knew something was wrong.

I like to think it’s the latter.
