Communicating with animals can be very hard. Yes, there are some species that can understand rudimentary commands. It’s impossible to have a complex conversation with them. Then there are some smarter animals. Like a gorilla. We’re descended from them, after all. That’s why it’s not surprising that we’ve had at least one that people have had conversations with. Meet Koko, the gorilla.
For those that don’t know, Koko is a gorilla who learned sign language. She can communicate quite well. It’s amazing that a gorilla can learn sign language, isn’t it? Animals are a lot smarter than we know. Anyways, she loves babies, but can’t have any herself. Her human friends brought in a box of kittens and she fell in love with two of them. They get along so great – she even lets them climb on her head!
Koko is a sweetheart. I’m glad that she was able to have more kittens, especially after the tragedy that happened before. She in her 40’s now and deserves as much happiness as she can for the rest of her life. She’s already lived past a gorilla’s life expectancy, but that may be because she’s not in the wild. Hopefully she will live for many more years, since she’s one of a kind.
This is a gorilla that exhibits so many human qualities. I hope that other gorillas can learn sign language, because this is a fascinating way for humans to be able to communicate with an animal. It’s also important because gorillas are in trouble and this bridge to communication might be able to save a lot more of them. Koko and her kittens may be showing the way to doing that.
