The war for our wallets has begun as the Superbowl 2020 TV commercials are popping up all over. The ad everyone is buzzing about features the coolest customer around, Sam Elliott performing a spoken word version of Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” to a saloon full of dusty cowboys. He then heads outside to dance battle the X-man himself.
Sam Elliott is known as a sort of professional cowboy. He exudes the wiry strength of the Old West. He’s like a physical manifestation of that enterprising spirit that had people pushing through the frontier looking for a new life. So when he walks into a saloon, everyone takes notice.
They expect him to say something profound, and he does, but his words aren’t at all expected. He begins to recite a spoken word version of Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” and his performance has everyone in the room on edge. Then he heads outside to dance battle the rapper himself. It’s silly, it’s awesome, it’s Superbowl ad perfection.
