This classic “All in the Family” scene begins in a hospital, where Dr. Wynell Thatcher (played by Vinnette Justine Carroll) pushes a cart. “Mr. Bunker! Mr. Bunker!” she calls out. From behind the door, we hear Archie.
He yells that he’s changing and tells her to wait. Soon, the door opens, and Archie comes in, looking annoyed. “Aw, look at this thing they get me to wear here!” he complains.
“What’s the problem?” asks the doctor. “The problem? Look at the back of it there!” Archie quickly regrets saying this as the doctor goes to look. “No, don’t look at the back of it!”
His issue, he grumbles, is that he can’t figure out which side of him he wants to “flash to the world.” The doctor scoffs and tells him to get into bed, but Archie makes her turn around before he’ll do it.
Once in bed and comfy, Archie tells her she can turn around. He explains that he wants her to explain what she’s doing to him before she does it.
The sassy doctor then lays down the law: if he behaves, she’ll be nice to him. If not, she tells him she’ll beat him with a bedpan! Hearing this, Archie looks away, muttering under his breath.
Changing topics, he tells the doctor that she talks funny and asks, “what part of Harmem are you from?”. The doctor explains that she’s from the West Indies, which is lost on Archie, judging from his “Alhola” response.
If you remember watching “All in the Family” in the past, you’ll surely want to re-watch this classic scene! Many fans loved the chemistry between O’Connor and Carroll during this performance. Unfortunately, Carroll only appeared in two “All in the Family” episodes. If anything, that makes the scene worth watching even more!
