A Pitbull, Kaya, living at a shelter in Victoria, British Columbia, was recently fostered by Jesse & Tara. The abandoned Pitbull showed up at a farm, and people working there got her to the shelter.

When the couple first fostered Kaya, her ribs were showing. Soon, the dog started to put on a lot of weight in her belly area, making the foster parents think that they were overfeeding her. So they took her to the vet for a checkup, and it turned out that she was pregnant.
It came as a massive shock for the foster parents, but they thought it would be ok because she'd get a regular size litter. At the end of her pregnancy, Kaya really got big. She would get exhausted and lay down and roll over on the grass to help her back.

However, whenever she felt better, she would play with Jesse. Soon, the future mama dog started to do the nesting, so the couple knew that she would begin to give birth within 24 to 48 hours.
During the first few hours in the morning, there were seven to eight puppies already. So, the couple thought that Kaya would be done giving birth when they had dinner. Two and a half days later, when the couple counted the litter, they found 15 puppies and thought Kaya was done giving birth to all. But, after half an hour, the mama dog gave birth to the 16th puppy.

There were actually 18 puppies in total, but two were stillborn. Even as they had lost two puppies, the parents were overjoyed by the thought that the other 16 looked perfectly healthy. The first week was really tiresome for Kaya and her foster parents. The kind couple had to take sleeping shifts to help the mama feed the babies.
Kaya did a fantastic job as a mother. She even taught them how to dig, so the puppies kept digging holes in the yard, which helped them exercise. Finally, the puppies were ready to go to their new homes at nine weeks. It was an emotional goodbye for the foster parents. After Kaya's pregnancy, Jesse and Tara decided to adopt the Pitbull mama & her puppy Sefina.
