I hope you’re having an amazing day because we’re about to stroll down memory lane together. Do you remember those golden days of shopping at TG&Y? That’s right, the good ol’ store that brought communities together with their wide variety of products and irresistibly affordable prices. I can almost smell the new merchandise as we walked through those sliding doors, can’t you?

So, let’s jog your memory a bit more, shall we? TG&Y was born from a partnership between Robin Tomlinson, Les Gosselin, and Raymond Young back in 1936. These three ambitious amigos met at a trade show in 1932 and decided to pool their resources together. Their first store opened its doors in Norman, Oklahoma, with the name derived from the initials of their last names – clever, right?
Now, if you’re a true TG&Y connoisseur, you know that the chain started off in rural communities and small towns before spreading its wings into urban centers and suburbs. And here’s a fun fact: in 1957, Butler Brothers out of Chicago bought TG&Y when it had 127 outlets. But no worries, Raymond Young was still at the helm, overseeing operations until his retirement.

Hold onto your hats, folks, because did you know that David Green, a supervisor with TG&Y, left the company to start his own chain called Hobby Lobby? Yeah, that same Hobby Lobby that’s now based in Oklahoma City!
At its peak, TG&Y had over 1,000 stores nationwide. Over time, there were several attempts to rebrand the beloved store, but something needs to be fixed. By 1980, they even tried shifting the outlet stores to look more like department stores. Alas, in 1986, McCrory’s bought out the remaining 730 TG&Y outlets, leading to the closure of 200 stores. By 2002, the entire chain was liquidated.

But you know what? It’s not all doom and gloom. The memories of those vibrant aisles and shelves stocked with everything from toys to clothes will live on forever in our hearts. And we can still reminisce about those good times spent shopping with friends and family at TG&Y.
