Jeff Gutt didn’t have any life-changing ambitions when he took the stage of X-Factor in 2012. He just wanted to show off his talents a little, maybe gain some good publicity for his band, and, of course, make his young son proud. What he got was a lot more than he bargained for.
The judges were skeptical when Gutt told them of his song choice. He’d elected to sing Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”, a challenging song for even seasoned veterans. A few of the judges looked at Jeff as if he were crazy and overly ambitious.
Once he opened his mouth, though, all bets were off. The audience immediately came to life, stunned by the Gutt’s beautiful voice. He received a well-deserved standing ovation, leaving much of the audience drying their tears.
Even Simon Cowell, a notorious hardnose on the show, was impressed. “I’ve heard that song a lot,” Cowell said. “I’ve sat in this chair a long time, and it was one of the most brilliant auditions I have heard.”
Gutt made it through the auditions that season, but was eliminated in the boot camp portion. However, he returned the following year, and finished second place.
