If ever there was a high-energy song made for dancing, it’s “Footloose.” Singer-songwriter Kenny Loggins created it for the 1984 movie of the same name that starred Kevin Bacon and Lori Singer. In the movie, high school drama and romance unfold against the backdrop of a small, stifling town where dancing and rock music are banned.
Although still in elementary school, 9 year-olds Paige Glenn and Artyon Celestine went totally Footloose for the quarterfinals of season 12 of hit reality show “America’s Got Talent.” The two kids, both from Southern California, met at a dance studio a couple years earlier and have since become best friends and a prize-winning dance duo.
Paige and Artyon had already wowed both the audience and the panel of judges with Aqua’s “Barbie Girl,” a pop classic from the 1990s. Now everyone was on the edge of their seats, eager to find out what they would be dancing to this time.
Once “Footloose” was cued up, Paige and Artyon immediately got going. Paige started by dancing on the judges’ table while Aryton came sliding out on stage on his knees. Despite their young age, they had no trouble pulling off an intense and demanding dance routine. In fact, some of Artyon’s moves were downright acrobatic, including some spectacular backflips and splits. The audience was clearly impressed, as were a couple of the judges. Mel B said, “You two are just like lightning bolts! As soon as you come onstage you light everything up.” Heidi Klum also had high praise: “I think the two of you are an explosion of talent and you put me in the best mood. You put the biggest smile on my face — I love watching you two perform, I love it”
