The homecoming dance is such a huge deal for many teenage high schoolers. The planning can be extensive and exhausting along with all the hype to live up to. Many movies and TV shows would have you think that the night always ends up in tears. You’re about to see that this is not the case.
I recently talked with my niece and asked her about how home coming dances work these days. She told me that today, kids will plan very elaborate proposals to each other and it can be a very big deal indeed. She decided, like many other students, to go with a big group of friends. Either way this is usually a very big night and it can leave a lifelong memory for most.
Daniel, a 17 year old boy with Down Syndrome almost missed his chance to create memories. His condition has led to a lifetime of being stigmatized and sometimes left out. His initial attempts at asking fellow female classmates didn’t go so well and things weren’t looking so good for Daniel. That is until Kylie, a classmate of Daniel’s, decided to ask HIM and it made Daniels day to say the least.
“I don’t think of kids with disabilities as being any different and I just hope that I can make his night fun.”
